Food and drinks in Japan: not always fun

In Japan, and especially in the area where I am, when you go out, you have this choice: cheap contaminated food, or smoky restaurant. On rare occasions you find a place that has neither, but then those places are more expensive.

Do you pick the restaurant that serves potentially contaminated food or drinks? But then why run the risk of (perhaps) getting sick later, all while eating fairly bland, generic food?

Do you pick the smoky place? Those clothes you're wearing will go straight to the laundry, you know. Also, for some reason I have trouble talking with people smoking inches from me. I lose interest quickly.

Ok, so the non-smoking, non-contaminated restaurant/izakaya/bar then? Guess you won't get to save that laundry money after all.
